Summary:

The 2026 Summer Community Organizing Fellowship is a deep community organizing and local power training program for young people and individuals belonging to communities disproportionately impacted by disenfranchisement and underrepresentation.

This fellowship offers the opportunity for young and impacted leaders from across the state to learn how to participate in all levels of political communication, from digital and community organizing to testifying in the state legislature to engaging with the media and more.

This is a remote Fellowship that requires internet access.

This training is being offered at no cost to the fellows. Fellows may earn a $1,000 stipend upon successful completion of all program requirements.

It is a 11-week program running from Monday, May 25 through Friday, August 7th with an expected commitment of 5-10 hours a week.

Program Goals:

  • Fellows will learn how to understand their own lived experience as expertise and the value of that expertise in public forums and political narratives. We believe those closest to the problems are best equipped to know the solutions, and those voices need to be uplifted in political discussion.

  • Fellows will learn how to tell their story as a tool for social change and how to adjust that story for various political actions and audiences; such as community organizing, grassroots lobbying, and engaging with local media. By telling our own truths, we can show real examples of the impact of public policy in our communities.

  • Fellows will learn how to have values-based political discussions that move people to action. By focusing on lived experiences and shared values, we will invest in individual leaders and in building community power.

Responsibilities:

  • Commitment of 5-10 hours per week.

  • In person orientation in Topeka (mileage reimbursed) on May 25th

  • 2 meetings per week lasting approximately 1.5 hours and 1 meeting a week lasting approximately 30 minutes. Primary meetings will be 3:30-5 pm on Monday and Friday, secondary meetings will be scheduled based on fellow preference and availability. Each week will have the following:

    • Zoom meeting for skills training

    • Skills assignment that should take no more than 2 hours

    • Short midweek check-in with the Fellowship Manager or Program Assistant

    • Zoom meeting to present your assignment for feedback from your peers

  • Fellows will be in touch with program staff via email each week for any help they may need.

  • Additional leadership opportunities are possible

Eligibility:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age, and a Kansas resident with reliable internet access

  • Must be passionate about politics and dedicated to becoming a visible vocal force for good in your community.

  • Fellows must commit to staying engaged in movement work after fellowship graduation.

While all are welcome to apply, this fellowship is designed to uplift the voices of young people and individuals belonging to communities disproportionately impacted by disenfranchisement and underrepresentation.
